|Derek Irving & His Combo
Inspired By 50's Rock 'N' Roll, Rockabilly, R&B
About the band: Mono Blues Rock n Roll Rockabilly - I take inspiration from Sun Records and Chess Records - the raw energy of that music is what I find moves me!! National and International Recording artist, Derek Irving has played guitar with Mitch Woods and His Rocket 88's, Doyle Bramhall II, The Aces, Charlie Musselwhite and New Orleans legends Earl King and Johnny Adams. Since fronting his own band Derek Irving and His Combo, the band has opened for Jimmie Vaughan, Wayne "The Train" Hancock, Roy Rogers and rockabilly legend Rosie Flores. With his Combo, the band delivers vintage sounding rock n roll with nods to 50's R&B and 50's rockabilly. Derek's shows are full of energy and rawness, with lively dynamic driving rhythms and greasy guitars.
Derek finds beauty in classic mono recordings from such legendary record labels as Chess Records, Excello Records and Sun Records. Derek not only front's his own band, but has become quite the respectable and responsible "hired gun" playing guitar backing Doyle Bramhall II, Lightin' Malcom, Christone "KINGFISH" Ingram, Earl King, Mitch Woods and His Rocket 88s, Charlie Musselwhite, Terry Hanck, Mark Hummel and the Blues Survivors, Johnny Adams and The Aces. While deeply rooted and inspired by blues musicians of the 1950's and 1960's Derek use's his inspiration to play slashing greasy guitar and is a player definitely from the "less is more" school. Derek's primary focus on guitar is playing rhythm and molding the sound. Then when it's time for a solo stepping up delivering traditional guitar lines with authenticity and conviction. Derek's core guitar style and sound is flexible enough to blend with the ensemble he's playing with.
While with Mitch Woods and His Rocket 88's between 1990-1994, Derek toured the US and Europe extensively during that period as well as recording on Mitch's "Shakin' The Shack Records" released by Blind Pig Records. In 1995 Derek started his next band, The Aces which was a local fixture for the next 15 years. In 2009 The Aces released their debut record on El Toro Records out of Spain, and won the Northbay "Best Blues Band" award presented by the Bohemian in October 2010.
Definition of "Combo" (source wikipedia): Smaller jazz bands, also known as combos, are common in night clubs and other small venues and will be made up of three to four musicians.
