Juke, The Blueflames

I still have the first self-produced Blueflames demo CD "Sun Ray Presents...", which was the first I ever heard of The Blueflames, and they were quite impressive even then, mixing rock 'n' roll, rockabilly and rhythm & blues. In 2000 their superb debut album "Memphis To Chicago" was released on Raucous records (see our reviews section), on which The Blueflames presented us with even more rhythm & blues influences. Now, 4 years later, here's a welcome follow up from this great UK based rockin' rhythm & blues band.

The album opens with a catching slapping version of Arthur Crudup's "Shout Sister Shout", going straight on into the rockin' rhythm of Roy Orbison's "Mean Little Mama", with fabulous guitar breaks which immediatly gave me the goosebumps. Dr. Ross' vivacious "Boogie Disease" is next on the menu, a blues stomper from the vaults of Sun. Marlon Mitchell's "Ice Cold Baby" brings us back to the rockabilly roots, and at this point it's quite clear to me that The Blueflames have again found a superb mix of rock & blues. Well known classics like "Born To Love One Woman" (Ric Cartey), "Brand New Cadillac" (Vince Taylor), "Suzie Q" (Dale Hawkins) "Move Around" (Joe Poovey) and "Rockin' Rollin' Stone" (Andy Starr) are presented Blueflames style, with a lot of rhythm, a lot of soul, and most of all, a lot of rock 'n' roll.

Of course there are also a few Blueflames originals, "Mule Train Blues", "Money's All Gone" and "Down The Mountain". All jewels on their own accord. You just gotta love this album, very well produced and packed with great music. And if I may suggest my favorite track, try playing the Blueflames rendition of Groovey Joe Poovey's "Move Around" with the volume on max! I'm pretty sure you'll feels the chills running up and down your spine as well...
